The Foundry Lofts

The challenge

The building had stood empty for nineteen years. The roof was gone across a third of the span, the cast iron frame needed assessment before anything could be loaded, and the whole structure was locally listed, so the original fabric had to be retained wherever possible.

What we did

We stabilised the frame first, then worked inward, retaining and repairing the original trusses rather than replacing them. New floors were hung from an independent steel structure so no additional load went through the historic ironwork.

The result

Eleven apartments, all sold before completion. The retained ironwork became the development’s main selling point, and the scheme was shortlisted for a regional conservation award.
